Nudge Art Mural

Located at Gowanus Houses in Brooklyn, NY

Created by:
Teaching Artist Anthony Posada & Gowanus Houses Youth

In this Nudge Art program, our Nudge Artivists’ discussions revolved around several prevailing themes: equality, belonging, safety, and possibility. They wanted their art to be bright, inspiring, and inviting for the community to engage with.

The Gowanus Nudge Artivists wanted to ensure that inclusion was a prominent feature of their design, which is represented in the rainbow colors painted along the vertical sides of the structure’s steps. The messages that they chose within their design - DREAM BIG, LOVE IS LOUDER, CARE FOR EACH OTHER, and SEEING IS BELIEVING - are represented by a mix of words and symbols. DREAM BIG and LOVE IS LOUDER are spelled out; SEEING IS BELIEVING is represented by a pair of eyes, and CARE FOR EACH OTHER is represented by a hand holding a heart. They also wanted to bring in nature and beauty, which are represented in the flowers, leaves, and clouds sprinkled throughout their design. Between the inspiriging messages and and beautiful nature representations are a series of patterns, including a triangle pattern frequently featured in African textiles, and waves that can be seeing flowing around the structure along the top vertical step, against the orange background.
