#GreetNeutrally Newsletter (08.14.19)
At genEquality, we have long highlighted the importance of language in advancing gender equality. Our very first nudges were language-based: greet neutrally and mind the adjective! Still, we always appreciate new research that reinforces the role of language in reducing gender bias and advancing gender equality.
In a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last week, Efrén Pérez (UCLA) and Margit Tavits (Washington University, St Louis) explored the impact of gender-neutral pronouns on the views of more than 3,000 Swedes. Their research provides significant evidence that gender-inclusive language can reduce gender biases and contribute to the promotion of equality and tolerance for both women and LGBT individuals.
Being thoughtful about the language we use is
a seemingly small action that has big impact.
"Hi team", "Good morning, everyone", and "Hey, friends"
are all easy - and research-backed! - ways
to use language to promote equality and inclusion.
Laura Russell, director of research, policy and campaigns at Stonewall lauded the findings, saying “This study adds to the evidence showing that when we use language that actively includes women and LGBT people, it makes a real difference in reducing gender stereotyping. Using gender-neutral language is a positive step towards creating a world where everyone is accepted without exception.
Our Greet Neutrally nudge is designed to remind us that language is a way to highlight unity instead of difference, show respect, and be inclusive. As Pérez framed it, “Our findings suggest that the words we choose to use can matter in getting us a little bit closer toward reaching that ideal.”
Greet neutrally. Spread the message.
